Imagine a childhood without hope, without a dream . . .
Every single living Cambodian, age 22 or older, is a direct victim of the Khmer Rouge, an evil communist experiment that claimed the lives of almost three million people. Although some progress has been made during the past thirty years, the impact of the genocide has yet to completely dissipate. In fact, one of its most devastating effects has been on the children and the disintegration of the family unit. More than half of Cambodia's population is under the age of eighteen. Too many of them are either neglected or orphaned. In both body and spirit, they are among the most desperate of the poor. Day in and day out they live with hunger, severe malnutrition, and disease. They have no families, no healthcare, and often, no hope for the future.
Yet, the future of Cambodia rests on their tiny shoulders.
Cambodia's best hope for tomorrow is to ensure that today's generation of children remains healthy, receives an education, and is capable of contributing to the country's future. As Cambodia has enjoyed relative peace for the past six years, several global children's organizations, church missions, and private citizens have given of themselves to help bring hope to this broken country; The Fred Waring Foundation is one of them.
